The Southern Lights, like our Northern Lights, are caused by colliding particles of energy.


PLANET Earth is bathed in an eerie green glow in this amazing picture taken from space. The image of the Southern Lights over the Indian Ocean was shot from the International Space Station.

Other snaps from the six astronauts on ISS show Hurricane Katia and Britain at night.
